Top Data Privacy Apps Selected by the Bitwarden Community

Bitwarden, the trusted leader in password, passkey, and secrets management, today announced the results of its fifth annual Data Privacy Week survey, capturing insights from over 3,500 Bitwarden community members. Data Privacy Week, observed globally this year from January 27 - 31, encourages individuals and organizations to prioritize data privacy and secure sensitive information online.

The trusted Bitwarden open source model fosters a passionate global community of security experts and privacy-conscious users with a wealth of knowledge about how to stay safe online. Using a password manager is a critical first step toward better security habits, and users can also integrate additional tools to strengthen their data privacy stack. The fifth annual Data Privacy Week Survey highlights the top privacy-centric apps recommended by the Bitwarden community across nine categories: web browser, email service, email alias provider, search engine, messaging app, authenticator, notes app, adblocker, and VPN.

Key findings:

  • Brave overtakes Firefox as the top recommended web browser, with 42% of the vote.
  • Brave and DuckDuckGo tied for top privacy-centric search engine with 32% of votes each.
  • Close call in the notes category: Standard Notes was #1 with 22% of the vote, followed by Obsidian at 21%.
  • Most popular authenticators include the integrated Bitwarden Authenticator (29%), Ente Auth (20%), Aegis for Android users (18%), and the standalone Bitwarden Authenticator app (11%).
  • SimpleLogin is the most popular email alias service, earning 40% of the vote.
  • With 72% of the vote, uBlock Origin is the clear winner for favorite ad blocker.
