NielsenIQ (NIQ), the world’s leading global consumer intelligence company, today announced the expansion of its Convenience Channel offering, designed to meet the industry’s growing need for high-quality, accurate market and consumer data. With this enhancement, NIQ becomes the leading provider of point-of-sale (POS) food and beverage service data in the convenience channel, including an expanded view of independent retailers. The offering will be on display at the NACS Show 2024, held Oct. 8-10 in Las Vegas.

NIQ's latest enhancements introduce two powerful features: first-time POS measurement of trip-driving fresh categories, including food and beverage services like fountain drinks, made-to-order sandwiches, and pizza, and expanded geographic data that enables businesses to better assess performance in critical regions.

Key benefits of the new offering include:

  • Channel Expansion: NIQ more than doubles its representation of independent retailers, delivering the most comprehensive view of the c-store channel.
  • Product Coverage: NIQ is the first-to-market with comprehensive food and beverage service coverage, offering POS data that provides a true market read delivered in the industry-standard hierarchy.
  • Market Granularity: Enhanced geographical data will roll out across all 48 continental U.S. states, with expanded designated market areas and more localized insights.

“Citing proprietary NIQ data, food service and prepared foods accounts for 10%-20% of in-store sales in the convenience space, the leading category in 2023,” said James Hunt, SVP, NA Retail at NIQ. “Gaining access to what’s driving the growth in Food Service, why, and where is a huge advantage for manufacturers and retailers looking to develop and differentiate the category, drive traffic, and meet a growing customer need.”

As the c-store market continues to grow, understanding its nuances is crucial. In 2023, in-store sales rose 6.4% to $327.6 billion, according to the NACS State of the Industry Report 2023. Adding to that growth, NIQ data shows total c-store locations increased by 1.4%, equating to a gain of 2,222 stores. As consumer behavior evolves, NIQ’s enhanced Convenience Channel data will help retailers and manufacturers collaborate strategically and effectively to improve customer satisfaction.

“Innovation and excellence have been at the core of NIQ's identity for over a century,” said Jason Zelinski, VP, Convenience, NA Retail at NIQ. “Combining our strong understanding of the convenience store industry with our advanced data measurement tools, we are committed to providing the most complete and clear understanding of convenience in 2025.”

NIQ’s insights empower decision-makers to adapt to shifting consumer preferences, optimize product assortments, improve marketing tactics, and fine-tune supply chain processes — capitalizing on emerging market opportunities.
